What "adaptive" should mean

Two properties fall out of it and both matter:
It needs no exercise calorie estimate. Estimated burns overstate energy cost by 20 to 30 percent routinely, and eating them back is the most common reason a deficit produces nothing. An adaptive app never adds them, because the training is already in the weight trend. What running actually costs.
It absorbs a changing training load automatically. Add thirty miles a week and both intake and trend move; the estimate follows. A dropdown cannot represent that.

Plenty of apps advertise "adaptive" targets while still starting from a formula and nudging it when you complain.
The test: would the app still produce a maintenance figure if you deleted your stated activity level? If the answer is no, it is a formula with a feedback loop bolted on, not a measurement.

Where even a correct target stops being enough
Adaptive TDEE solves the largest error in nutrition tracking and leaves one class of problem untouched.
A weekly-average target is the same number on Saturday and Wednesday. For a hybrid athlete those are not comparable days — a long run costs 1,000 to 1,500 kcal that Wednesday does not have. A weekly average under-feeds the biggest session and over-feeds the rest day, and the cost of under-feeding a long session does not show up on the run. It shows up in Monday's lifting, as partly refilled glycogen that feels exactly like weakness. Why the bill arrives two days later.
The counter-argument is legitimate: a target that moves during the day is harder to plan a day template around, and some people would rather have one fixed number. That is a preference, not an error.
And a measured expenditure figure still cannot be attributed. Expenditure rose 300 kcal a day — endurance block, more walking, or body composition? Only a system that also holds the training can split it, and the split is what tells you whether your plan is doing what you intended.
