Free Hybrid Training Apps: The Honest Options
[THE SHORT ANSWER]
A genuinely good free stack exists, and it is worth naming before anything else on this page: Intervals.icu for the endurance half, a free-tier lifting log for the strength half, and your platform's health app for recovery data. That combination gives you deep endurance analysis, adequate set logging and real HRV and sleep data for nothing. What it cannot do — and what no free option does — is compute the numbers that require both halves at once.

Strength: a free-tier lifting log
Hevy and Strong both have usable free tiers with limits on routines or history. Both log sets fast, which is the only thing a set logger has to do well.
Check one thing: whether the effort rating you record actually drives the progression, or is merely stored and displayed back. That distinction matters more than any feature on either app's comparison page.
Limit: neither models endurance load. Nothing changes because you ran thirty miles this week.
Recovery: your platform's health app
Apple Health or Health Connect already aggregates HRV, resting heart rate, sleep and workouts from whatever you wear. It is free, it is already there, and it is the same data every paid recovery app reads.
Limit: it stores and charts. It does not turn a reading into a decision about today's session.

Limit, and this is the expensive one: the calorie target is predicted from your body size and an activity dropdown. One setting covers a week with thirty miles of running and a week with none. Why that fails specifically.

The most flexible option at any price, and it fails on capture rather than arithmetic. You do not have a spreadsheet open between sets, so RIR gets remembered instead of recorded — and remembered RIR is not a data source. What the free stack cannot compute
Three questions, and every one needs inputs from at least two of the tools above.
1. Is my surplus real? Needs intake, weight trend and endurance volume together.
The arithmetic is unforgiving: a pound of lean tissue costs roughly 2,500 kcal, so a trained lifter gaining 0.5 lb a week needs about 179 kcal a day. A 40-minute run costs 400 to 500. If your maintenance came from an activity dropdown, three runs a week erased the surplus and nothing in the free stack can say so.
2. Should I deload? Needs lifting fatigue, endurance load and recovery markers together. A lifting-only view misses the spiked endurance week; an endurance-only view misses three heavy lower-body days.
3. Were my easy runs easy? Needs a threshold and the last four sessions graded against a band. Intervals.icu will show you the paces; nothing prescribes the band beforehand and grades against it afterwards.
None of that is hard arithmetic. It is arithmetic nobody is doing, in a spreadsheet, on a Sunday, until they stop.
