Five hundred and thirty-five calories a day, invisible to the model. That is larger than the gap between two adjacent activity multipliers, larger than most bulking surpluses and larger than most cutting deficits.

Where measurement wins, and what it costs

Measurement has none of those three errors, because it does not use any of those three inputs. It also handles metabolic adaptation automatically — a predicted number is wrong in a new way each month as your rate drifts, and a measured one re-derives itself.

What it costs is data. It needs consistent logging and consistent weigh-ins — around ten logged days and eight weigh-ins in a fourteen-day window — and it is exactly as honest as your logging. Under-report your intake and the arithmetic attributes your unlogged food to your metabolism, and your maintenance reads low.
