Whoop's measurement is good. What people leave over is the recurring cost and the fact that the number it produces will not show its work. Those are two different complaints and they point at different replacements, so it is worth being honest about which one is yours.

The two real complaints

The subscription. There is no hardware-only option. Stop paying and the band stops being a product. Over three years that is a substantial figure for a device measuring heart rate variability, which is not an expensive thing to measure.

The black box. Recovery is a percentage derived from HRV, resting heart rate, respiratory rate and sleep. The weights are proprietary. When it reads 34 percent and you feel fine, there is nothing to inspect — you cannot tell whether one bad HRV reading dominated, or whether your baseline drifted, or whether the strap sat badly. Why an unexplained number is hard to act on.

Garmin — free once the watch is paid for
