Hybrid Training for Triathletes Who Lift
[THE SHORT ANSWER]
A triathlete who also lifts is running four training stresses on one recovery budget: swim, bike, run and resistance training. That is more concurrent load than any other athlete in this category carries, and it changes what is realistic. The unusually good news is that the discipline you already do the most of — cycling — is the one that interferes least with resistance training, which gives a triathlete more room than the raw volume suggests.
The modality advantage
The concurrent-training research finds a clear moderator: running interferes with lower-body strength and hypertrophy at statistical significance; cycling does not.
The mechanism usually offered is eccentric loading. Running is thousands of eccentric contractions per session — the landing phase of every stride decelerates your bodyweight — producing muscle damage that has to be repaired out of the same budget your lifting draws on. Cycling is almost purely concentric. Swimming, similarly, is close to zero eccentric load.
So a triathlete's fifteen hours of training are not fifteen hours of equal cost to your lifting. The bike and swim hours are comparatively cheap; the run hours are not.
That has a direct programming consequence: schedule lifting around the run volume, not around total volume. The full modality argument.
What is realistic

The off-season line is the important one. It is the only window where building muscle is realistic, and triathletes routinely waste it — either resting completely or starting base training in November. Twelve weeks of strength-primary training with endurance held at easy volume will do more for your lean mass than the other forty weeks combined.
The three reasons to lift
Worth being specific, because "strength training is good for you" does not tell you what to program.
Running economy. The best-evidenced performance benefit. Heavy and explosive strength work improves the metabolic cost of running at a given pace, which is exactly what a triathlon run leg is limited by.
Injury resistance. Particularly relevant given the running volume and the repetitive loading.
Preserving lean mass under high volume. High endurance volume plus the energy deficit that often accompanies it erodes muscle. Resistance training is the signal that says keep this tissue.
Note what is not on that list: general conditioning. You have plenty.
Where the lift goes in the week
Two rules and everything else follows.
Not the day before a key run session. Lower-body fatigue costs the most on the run.
Not the day after a long ride. You are already drawing down.

Lifts on Monday and Friday: both follow easier days, neither precedes a key session, and both are separated from the same day's endurance work by six or more hours. That six-hour figure is where the measured interference drops from about −0.66 to about −0.10. The detail.
The energy problem, which is severe here
Triathlon training volume produces a very large energy cost, and low energy availability is the mechanism behind most of what goes wrong in this population — lost muscle, poor recovery, bone stress injuries, hormonal disruption and the whole RED-S picture.
The arithmetic is not subtle. Running costs roughly 1 kcal per kilogram per kilometre. A 155 lb (70 kg) triathlete at fifteen hours a week is easily 1,000 to 1,500 calories a day above a sedentary baseline.
A predicted maintenance figure will not find that. An activity dropdown covers a fifteen-hour week and a six-hour week identically, and the difference between them is larger than most people's entire deficit or surplus.
Measure it instead: trend weight change over fourteen days against actual intake, and every calorie of the training is in the number whether or not you logged the sessions. The method.
The swim gap, stated plainly
Base does not currently support swimming as a prescribed and graded endurance discipline. Run and ride are supported; swim is not.
For a triathlete that is a real limitation and it should factor into your tooling decision. The energy cost of swimming is still captured — measured maintenance does not care which discipline the calories went to — and the recovery signals are systemic and discipline-blind. But you will not get a prescribed swim band or a swim session grade, and if that is central to your preparation, an endurance platform that handles all three is the better primary tool.
Fuelling four disciplines
Two things matter more here than in single-sport training.
Carbohydrate as the remainder. Set protein from bodyweight and fat as a share of calories, then let carbohydrate absorb whatever is left. That way a heavy training week automatically produces a higher carbohydrate number without you recalculating anything, which is the only version of this that survives a real season. The ordering.
Fuelling the doubled days. The gap between two sessions is a feeding window, not just a rest window. Failing to eat in it turns the second session into a low-glycogen session, and the cost of that lands on the session after. How much and when.
What to do next
Look at where your lifting sessions currently sit relative to your key run sessions. If a lift is landing the day before a quality run, moving it is free and it is the highest-value single change available to you.
Then plan the off-season now, in the season, while you still remember that you meant to.
Questions
Should triathletes lift weights?
Yes. Strength work improves running economy, reduces injury risk, and preserves the lean mass that a high-volume endurance schedule otherwise erodes. Two sessions a week at moderate load through a race block is the usual prescription, rising to three or four in the off-season.
Can triathletes build muscle?
Slowly, and mainly in the off-season. During a race block the combination of high endurance volume and the energy cost that comes with it makes muscle gain unrealistic for most athletes — the honest goal is maintenance, and the off-season is where building happens.

On days with the lightest endurance load, separated from key sessions by six or more hours or a full day. The lift should never sit the day before a key run session or the day after a long ride, because those are the two places lower-body fatigue costs the most.
