What is the best Oura alternative?

[THE SHORT ANSWER]
Oura's sleep measurement is the best in consumer hardware, and its Readiness score does not know you lift. Both statements are true, and which one dominates decides whether an alternative is an upgrade or a sideways move.
What the ring is genuinely best at
Sleep. A sensor on a finger, held still, reads sleep duration, staging and overnight HRV more cleanly than a wrist strap that shifts and reads through tendon. Oura's staging validates better against polysomnography than any wrist device, and it is not close.
Overnight HRV specifically. Averaged across the night rather than sampled, which is the more stable measurement and the one worth trending. What the HRV evidence supports and where it is oversold.
Comfort. You will actually wear it, which is the precondition for all of the above.
Where it is weak
Training load. Oura infers activity from movement and heart rate. It does not know what you did, only that something happened. For running that is an acceptable approximation. For lifting it is close to useless: load, volume and proximity to failure are the variables that determine fatigue, and none of them moves a wrist or finger sensor.
The score is a black box. Readiness is a proprietary composite. When it reads 62 and you feel excellent, there is no way to see which input dragged it down or whether your baseline drifted. Why an unexplained number is hard to act on for years.
It produces a number, not a decision. Readiness 62 does not say whether to run the intervals, cut them to four, or lift instead and move the run.

The direct answer to the price objection. A ring, hardware-only pricing, respectable sleep and HRV measurement. The software is younger and the metabolic-tracking marketing is largely irrelevant to training decisions. If you like the ring and dislike the fee, this is the swap.
Whoop — better strain, worse sleep, still a subscription
Whoop's strain model is the best heart-rate-derived load metric in consumer hardware, and its wrist position costs it sleep accuracy relative to Oura. Same black-box problem, same recurring cost. The direct head-to-head.
Garmin — free once the watch is paid for
HRV Status, sleep staging, Body Battery and Training Readiness, included. Sleep accuracy below Oura, endurance load modelling far above it, and nothing recurring. Same opacity. What Garmin models.
Eight Sleep — sleep as an intervention
A different category: it changes your sleep rather than only measuring it, via temperature regulation. Expensive, and the measurement is a side effect. If your sleep is genuinely poor, an intervention may be worth more than a better number about it.
Morning readings and your own baseline — free
Resting heart rate on waking, bodyweight trend, sleep duration and a session rating. Catches most of the signal, every input visible. You lose overnight HRV, which is the one thing worth paying for. What the sleep evidence says about how much this matters.

The honest recommendation
Stay on Oura if sleep is the question you are answering. Nothing else measures it as well, and sleep is the recovery variable with the strongest evidence behind it.
Move to Ultrahuman if you want the ring without the fee.
Move to Whoop if you want strain rather than sleep detail.
Move to Garmin if you already own one and want to stop paying.
Add something that reads your training if the recurring complaint is that Readiness says you are fine after the hardest lifting session of the block. That is not a calibration issue — the fatigue it is missing does not exist in heart rate, and no ring will ever find it. What a recovery score looks like when the sets are on the same ledger.
Worth doing regardless: check your endurance ramp rate. It is the load measure with the best evidence for predicting breakdown, it costs nothing, and no ring computes it.

Why does Oura say I am recovered after a heavy lifting session?
Because Readiness is derived from heart rate, HRV, temperature and sleep, and heavy lifting produces mechanical and neural fatigue that does not appear in any of those. Five hard sets of squats can leave your autonomic markers looking fine while your capacity for the next session is meaningfully reduced.
Do I need a wearable to track recovery?
No, but overnight HRV is the single most informative input and you cannot get it without one. Resting heart rate on waking, sleep duration, bodyweight trend and honest session ratings capture most of the rest, and every one of those is a number you can see and check.
