[THE SHORT ANSWER]

If you already own a modern Garmin, you own most of Whoop already, without the subscription and with considerably better load modelling. The remaining gap is real but narrow, and it is worth knowing exactly what you are paying for.

What Whoop does better

Strain modelling. Whoop's daily Strain is the best heart-rate-derived cardiovascular load metric in consumer hardware. It is more responsive than Body Battery and it maps onto how a hard aerobic day actually feels.

Sleep coaching. Sleep need, sleep debt, and a target bedtime that responds to yesterday's strain. Garmin has a sleep score; Whoop has a sleep coach, and the difference is actionable.

Continuous measurement. No screen, longer battery, and a strap you wear through everything including the shower. Consistent wear is the precondition for any trend, and Whoop is easier to wear consistently than a watch.

Slightly cleaner overnight HRV, from more continuous sampling and a more consistent strap position.

What Garmin does better

Endurance load modelling, by a wide margin. Training Load, Acute Load, Training Status, VO2max estimation, race predictions, and per-session training effect split into aerobic and anaerobic. Whoop has one number, Strain, and no periodisation concept whatsoever.

It holds the training itself. Garmin knows the session was 8x400 at 5K pace. Whoop knows your heart rate was high for forty minutes. When you want to know why a week felt hard, one of those is an explanation.

Cost. Free once the watch is paid for. Over three years the difference is substantial.

GPS, pacing, structured workouts on the wrist. Whoop does none of this.

Where they are identically weak

Both are black boxes. Recovery and Body Battery are proprietary composites with undisclosed weights. When either says 38 and you feel excellent, there is no input to inspect and no way to learn whether the number or your perception was wrong. Why that matters when you have to trust it for years.

Both compare you to their own model rather than to your history in a way you can see. Baselines exist and are not visible.

Both fill gaps rather than admitting them. A night of bad contact produces an interpolated number rather than "no data".

Both misread resistance training. This is the important one.

The lifting problem, precisely

Strain and Body Battery are derived, dominantly, from heart rate. Heart rate is a good proxy for cardiovascular load and a poor one for the two things that make lifting fatiguing: mechanical tension on muscle and connective tissue, and central nervous system fatigue from high-force efforts.

So five sets of squats at RIR 1 — the most fatiguing session in a typical training week, in terms of what it costs your next session — produce a modest average heart rate and a modest Strain. Meanwhile a comfortable hour of Zone 2 produces a higher one.

The result is systematic and in the dangerous direction: both platforms tell you that you are recovered on the days after heavy lifting. Why the deload decision needs both signals rather than one score.

Which to pick

Garmin alone if you own one. It covers the large majority of what Whoop provides and does the training half far better.

Whoop alone if you dislike wearing a watch, want the sleep coaching, and your training is aerobic.

Both only if you are an endurance athlete who wants Garmin's load model and Whoop's recovery and sleep coaching, and the subscription is not a consideration.

Neither as a decision-maker if you lift seriously. Both will keep telling you a heavy strength week was restful, because the fatigue they are missing does not exist in heart rate. The information that would correct it is your set volume and proximity to failure, which neither device holds. What a recovery score looks like when the sets are on the same ledger.

Two things worth doing whichever you wear: count your weekly hard sets per muscle group, and check your endurance ramp rate. Those are the two load numbers with real evidence behind them, and no wearable computes either.
