Bulking While Running Without Losing the Surplus
[THE SHORT ANSWER]
You can build muscle while running, and the research is on your side: three recent concurrent-training meta-analyses found no significant compromise to hypertrophy overall. What makes it fail in practice is almost never interference. It is that the surplus stops existing. A trained lifter's usable surplus is about 179 kcal a day and a single 40-minute run costs 400 to 500 — so if maintenance was estimated in a week without running, adding three runs a week does not shrink the surplus, it deletes it.
The arithmetic that decides this
A pound of lean tissue costs roughly 2,500 kcal to build — much less than a pound of fat at 3,500, because lean tissue is mostly water. A trained intermediate adds lean tissue at about 0.5 lb a week at best.
0.5 lb/week * 2500 kcal/lb / 7 days = 179 kcal/day
For an advanced lifter at 0.25 lb a week it is 89 kcal a day.
Eighty-nine calories is roughly a banana. It is also smaller than the error bar on any prediction of your energy expenditure, which means you cannot steer at that resolution using arithmetic. You have to steer using the outcome.
Now add the endurance side:

Every one of those numbers is larger than the surplus. That is the whole problem in one table.
Why the diagnosis is almost always wrong
From the inside, the failure looks like this: the scale has not moved in six weeks, the squat has stalled, and you have been eating what your calculator said to eat plus a surplus.
The three conclusions people reach, in order of frequency:
- "My metabolism is broken." It is not. It is higher than the number you were eating against.
- "Interference is real after all." Possibly, at the margin. But interference does not stop the scale moving. Energy balance does.
- "I'm not eating enough protein." Usually you are. Protein is not the binding constraint when total energy is the binding constraint.
The actual answer is that a number produced without the running in it was used to plan a life that had running in it.
Fixing it
1. Measure maintenance, do not predict it
Fourteen days, ten of them logged, eight weigh-ins:

That figure contains every calorie the running cost, whether or not you logged the session and whether or not your watch estimated it well. It is the only method that is immune to the specific error that breaks hybrid bulks. Full method here.
2. Set the surplus against the measured number
+200 to +250 a day. Not more. The lean-gain ceiling does not rise because you ate more, so anything above it goes to fat at 0.64 lb a week for every extra 320 calories. The calculator will show your split.
3. Let the target move with the day

4. Steer by trend weight and waist together

Three consecutive weeks pointing the same direction is a signal. One week is weather, and one week of data cannot possibly resolve a 179-calorie surplus.
Managing the endurance side while gaining
Bias toward cycling where the modality is a free choice. Running interferes with lower-body strength and hypertrophy at statistical significance; cycling does not. The usual explanation is eccentric loading — running is thousands of eccentric contractions per session and cycling is almost none. If your endurance goal is health, conditioning or work capacity rather than a running race, the bike is close to a free lunch.
Separate sessions by six hours. Same-session interference is around −0.66; separated it is about −0.10. The scheduling detail.
Keep easy days genuinely easy. An easy run at moderate pace is a hard session that appears nowhere in your plan and was subtracted from nothing. This is the failure that makes people who have done everything else right still experience interference. Why easy runs drift fast.
Hold endurance volume steady during a gaining block. A ramping endurance load and a fixed surplus are incompatible: each new week of miles quietly eats more of the surplus, and the trend goes flat for a reason nobody can see. Pick a volume, hold it, gain, and ramp endurance in a different block.
What you are actually trading
Being honest about this is more useful than optimism.
Gaining while running is slower than gaining while not running. Not because of interference, but because the practical surplus you can sustain is smaller and the recovery capacity available to lifting is lower. Expect roughly 0.25 lb a week where a pure lifter might manage 0.5.
In exchange you keep an aerobic base that took months to build and would take months to rebuild, you keep the health markers that come with it, and you avoid the cycle of building mass in winter and losing it every spring to a running block.
For most people that is a good trade. It is a trade, and it is worth making deliberately rather than discovering.
Common mistakes
- Using a calculator's maintenance figure and adding a surplus to it. The single most common failure.
- Eating back watch calories on top of a measured maintenance. Counts the same run twice.
- Ramping endurance volume during a gaining block. Pick one thing to increase.
- Reading raw scale weight instead of trend weight. Four pounds of swing on identical body composition.
- Increasing the surplus when the scale does not move after two weeks. Two weeks is one window.
- Cutting calories on rest days, which removes the surplus on the days adaptation happens.
What to do next
Before changing anything, spend fourteen days measuring your actual maintenance with your current running volume in place. Most people find it is 200 to 500 calories higher than what they were eating against, and that single number explains six months of confusion.

How fast should I gain weight while running?
