Tactical and Military Fitness: Training for the Test
[THE SHORT ANSWER]
A tactical fitness test measures strength, endurance and bodyweight capacity on the same morning, and the job behind it demands all three continuously. That is the hybrid problem in its purest institutional form: you cannot specialise, the test date is fixed, and the standards do not care which capacity you find easiest. What makes it tractable is that the events are known, repeatable and trainable — which is more than most athletes get.
What these tests actually measure
The specific events vary by service and by country, but the underlying capacities are consistent:

Two things follow immediately. The events are known, which means specificity is available in a way it is not for a general fitness goal. And they conflict: the run rewards being light and aerobically fit, the strength events reward being heavy and strong.
Sequencing beats simultaneity
The instinct is to train everything every week. That produces a week with six or seven hard sessions and a plateau in all of them.
Better: run blocks with a primary goal, and hold the others.

The strength block is where you build. Aerobic capacity decays slowly and can be held with three sessions a week; muscle and maximal strength do not build under high running volume. Doing it the other way round — trying to build during the aerobic block — is the standard mistake.
Rucking is not cardio
The most common scheduling error in tactical training.
Loaded carriage is heavily eccentric and mechanically demanding, and its recovery cost is closer to a lower-body lifting session than to an easy run. A twelve-mile ruck under load does not slot into a week as aerobic volume; it slots in as a leg day.
Consequences:
- Do not put a ruck the day before or after heavy squats or deadlifts.
- Count it as a hard session in your weekly total.
- Ramp it under 1.3 times your recent average, like any endurance load. Connective tissue adapts more slowly than muscle and cardiovascular fitness, which is why ruck injuries arrive suddenly in people who felt fine. The ratio.
Rucking is also its own skill — pace, cadence, load carriage mechanics, foot care. It has to be trained specifically and cannot be substituted with running plus lifting.
The bodyweight events
Push-ups, pull-ups and sit-ups are strength endurance, and they respond to a different dose than maximal strength does.
Train them with volume at submaximal effort, frequently. Sets at 60 to 75% of your maximum reps, several times a week, accumulating total volume. Maxing out weekly is a test, not training, and it produces fatigue without much adaptation.
Underlying strength is still the ceiling. If your bench press maximum is low, your push-up endurance has a low roof no matter how many you do. Heavy pressing raises the ceiling; volume work fills it.
That interaction is why a strength block genuinely helps the bodyweight events, even though nothing in the block looks like a push-up.
Bodyweight is a variable, not a constant
The run rewards being lighter. The strength and carry events reward being heavier and stronger. The test scores all of them together.
There is no universally correct answer, and the useful move is to decide deliberately rather than drift:
- If your run score is comfortable and your strength events are marginal, a small surplus and a strength block is the right call.
- If your run is the limiting event, holding or slightly reducing bodyweight while maintaining strength is right.
- Chasing both simultaneously produces slow progress on both.
Track trend weight rather than raw scale weight, and track it alongside your event scores rather than in isolation. Which signals to trust when two disagree.
Recovery, which is not optional in this population
Tactical athletes carry an unusual problem: the job itself is training load. Shift work, long days on your feet, carrying equipment, poor sleep schedules. None of it appears in a training log and all of it draws on the same recovery budget.
Two consequences.
Use a reactive deload trigger rather than a calendar. Two independent fatigue signals firing at once — recovery depressed against your own baseline, RIR drifting up at fixed load, three or more nights under seven hours, or a flat strength trend. Sleep is the signal to watch first. In shift-working populations it is usually the first of the four to move, and it moves before performance does.
Eating for it
Measure maintenance rather than predicting it. Tactical training volume varies enormously week to week — a ruck week and a gym week are hundreds of calories apart — and an activity dropdown cannot see the difference.
Fourteen days of logged intake against your trend weight change gives you a figure that already contains the rucking, the shifts and the standing. The method.
Protein at 1.0 g per pound. Carbohydrate as the remainder, so it rises automatically on the weeks with the most work in them.
The final four weeks
Practise the events in the order the test uses them, under accumulated fatigue.
The test is not six separate events. It is a sequence, and your push-up score after a sprint-drag-carry is a different number from your fresh push-up score. Rehearsing the sequence is what closes the gap between your training numbers and your test numbers — and that gap is where most of the disappointment in this population comes from.
What to do next
Write out your current week and mark every hard session, counting rucks and heavy carry work as hard. If the count is above five, that is why nothing is moving, and the fix is sequencing rather than effort.
