For endurance athletes without a good watch, often yes. For lifters, it is the weakest case in the category — and the reason is structural, not a calibration problem that a firmware update fixes.

What Whoop is genuinely good at

Strain. The best heart-rate-derived cardiovascular load metric in consumer hardware. It responds appropriately to hard aerobic days and it maps onto how a week actually felt.

Sleep coaching. Not just a sleep score: sleep need, accumulated debt, and a bedtime target that responds to yesterday's strain. This is the feature most people actually change behaviour from, and the sleep evidence supports caring about it. What the evidence says about sleep and adaptation.

Consistent wear. No screen, long battery, worn through everything. Trends require continuous data, and Whoop is the easiest device to wear continuously.

Clean overnight HRV. Continuous sampling and a consistent strap position produce a more stable overnight measure than most watches.

What you are actually paying

There is no hardware-only option. Stop paying and the band stops being a product. Over three years that is a substantial recurring figure for continuous heart-rate measurement, which is not expensive technology.

The black box problem

Recovery is a percentage derived from HRV, resting heart rate, respiratory rate and sleep, with proprietary weights.

When it reads 34 percent and you feel excellent, there is no way to find out which input drove it, whether one poor reading dominated, whether your baseline drifted, or whether the strap sat badly. You are asked to trust a number you cannot interrogate, indefinitely.

That is tolerable for a season and corrosive over years. Eventually people either follow it against their own judgement or stop reading it. Why an unexplained number is hard to keep acting on.

The lifting problem, stated precisely

This is the one that decides the question for a lot of people.

Strain and Recovery are built on heart rate. Heart rate is a good proxy for cardiovascular load and a poor one for the two things that make lifting fatiguing:

  • Mechanical tension on muscle and connective tissue.
  • Central nervous system fatigue from producing high forces.

So five sets of squats at RIR 1 — very likely the most costly session of your week in terms of what it takes from your next session — produce a modest heart rate and a modest Strain. A comfortable hour of Zone 2 produces a higher one.

The error is systematic and in the dangerous direction: Whoop tells you that you are recovered on the days after heavy lifting. Why the deload decision needs both signals rather than one composite.

For a pure endurance athlete this barely matters. For a lifter it means the central metric misreads the central training stress, and no subscription tier changes that.

What produces a decision rather than a number

The deeper limitation, shared with Oura and Garmin: all of them output a score, none outputs a decision. Recovery 41 does not say whether to do today's intervals, cut them to four, or lift instead and move the run to Thursday.

Turning a recovery signal into a decision requires knowing what the session was going to be, what the week has already contained on both sides, and how much energy was available. A wrist strap holds one of those three.

If your training is aerobic and you will act on sleep data, Whoop earns its money. If the recurring frustration is that it scores your hardest lifting week as restful, the missing information is your set volume and proximity to failure — and that cannot be sensed at the wrist. What a recovery score looks like when the sets are on the same ledger.

Two things worth doing regardless of what you wear: count your weekly hard sets per muscle group and check your endurance ramp rate. Those are the two load numbers with real evidence behind them, they are free, and no wearable computes either one.
