Do recovery wearables work for lifters?
Partially, and less well than for endurance athletes. They measure autonomic recovery through HRV and resting heart rate, which is real.

Every consumer recovery score is built on heart rate and heart rate variability. Heavy lifting barely moves either one. That is the whole problem, and it means the honest best answer for a lifter involves less hardware than the marketing suggests.
Why the wearables misread lifting
Recovery scores — Whoop's Recovery, Oura's Readiness, Garmin's Body Battery — are composites of overnight HRV, resting heart rate, respiratory rate and sleep.
Those inputs track autonomic recovery. That is a real thing and it is not the thing that limits your next lifting session.
Two kinds of fatigue determine whether you can hit your working sets today:
- Mechanical fatigue — microdamage and stress in muscle and connective tissue from tension under load.
- Central nervous system fatigue — reduced capacity to produce high forces after doing so recently.
Neither appears in heart rate. So five sets of squats at RIR 1, with three minutes of rest between them, produce a low average heart rate and a modest strain figure — while being very likely the most costly session in your week for what it takes from the next one. A comfortable hour of Zone 2 scores higher. Why heart-rate-derived load systematically misreads resistance training.
The error is systematic and in the dangerous direction: the wearable tells you that you are recovered on the days after heavy lifting.
What the wearables are still good for
They are not useless, and it is worth being precise about where they earn their place.
Sleep duration and quality. The recovery variable with the strongest evidence base, and hard to measure honestly without a device. What the evidence supports.
Autonomic stress from non-training sources. Illness, alcohol, life stress, travel, and under-eating all show up in HRV and resting heart rate before you notice them. That is genuinely useful information a lifter would otherwise miss. What the HRV research actually found.
Long-term trend. A resting heart rate drifting up over three weeks means something, regardless of discipline.
So: keep the wearable for sleep and for autonomic drift. Stop reading its recovery percentage as a verdict on whether to squat.
What actually indicates lifting recovery
All of these are free, and all of them beat a proprietary composite for this specific job.
Performance against a known reference. Your top set at a given RIR, compared to the same lift last week. If you hit 100kg for 6 at RIR 2 last Tuesday and today 100kg for 4 feels like RIR 0, that is the measurement. Nothing else is as direct. Why proximity to failure is the input that matters.
Weekly hard sets per muscle group against what you have historically tolerated. The number that governs whether you are accumulating more fatigue than you can absorb. Count it.
Endurance load alongside it. If your running minutes ramped while your set volume held, your total load rose and your recoverable volume fell. Check the ramp rate.
Energy intake. Under-eating is the most common cause of what feels like poor recovery, and it is invisible to every wearable. How much a hybrid week actually needs.
Joint and tendon complaints. The earliest honest signal, and entirely subjective.

The recommendation
If you already own a Garmin: use it for sleep and HRV trend, ignore Body Battery as a lifting verdict, and track your set volume separately. Cost: nothing. What Garmin models.

If you are an endurance athlete who also lifts: Whoop's strain model earns its money on the endurance half and misreads the strength half. Know which half it is talking about. Whether it is worth it.
If you lift and run and want one signal you can trust: the inputs that matter are your set volume, your proximity to failure, your endurance load and your energy intake, read against your own baselines rather than a population model. That requires a system holding the training, not a sensor on your wrist. What that looks like.
